Artist's Description
Portrait of Nanna Risi with a peacock feather fan by Victorian neo-classical artist Lord Frederic Leighton (1830-1896), painted c.1859. Known as 'La Nanna', Risi was the wife of a cobbler living in the Travestere district of Rome. She was a professional model and mistress of German artist Anselm Feuerbach. Leighton completed at least two other portraits of Risi; given the date, this one was probably painted in Paris, where Leighton was living at the time. The title 'Pavonia' derives from 'pavone', the Italian word for peacock, though whether this is a reference to Risi's beauty, or temperament, or both, is unclear.
