Artist's Description

One of the best preserved early Christian Basilicas in Crete lies in the Amari Valley. It dates from the late 7th c. AD, although it seems likely that an earlier church may have stood on the same site, from wich architectural fragments were reused. With the narthex on his back and looking eastward, the photographer captured the central nave with its fallen monolithic columns leading to the central apse in the middle of the image (the side aisles end also in small apses of their own). Mount Ida (Psiloritis) with its 2456m high summit is in the background. The numerous Cretan Basilicas echo across the centuries the effective ministry of Titus throughout the island (Titus 1:5).
